Research

Hongping’s research areas include clays and clay minerals, mineral surface chemistry, mineral-based nanomaterials and environmental mineralogy.

His present work includes: (1) the reactivity of clay mineral surface, and modifying the clay surface and interlayer (via intercalation, pillaring and silylation) with applications to synthesis of novel clay-based nanomaterials; (2) mineral – pollutant interactions (with emphasis on clay minerals and iron oxides), to well understand the role of mineral to the fate of pollutants on the earth surface and utilize natural minerals as environmental materials.
